Grains

Our Organic Grains

Our grains are grown in a rotation with cover crops and compost from our livestock to ensure good fertility. This practice allows us to grow nutrient-dense, high-protein grains for human consumption.

We grow hard red winter wheat for bread flour, soft white winter wheat for pastry flour, winter rye for rye flour, and an open-pollinated Early Riser corn for cornmeal.

The straw from these grains is used to keep our cows warm and dry through the winter months.

From Field to Flour, Feed, and Cover Crop Seed

All of our grains—those grown for human consumption, for livestock feed, and for use as cover crop seed—are harvested by our oldest son, Alister, using his John Deere 6620 combine, which he purchased when he was just 15 years old.

Each batch is carefully monitored for quality and safety. Using a handheld moisture reader, we check that the grain is properly dried—safe storage requires it to be below 14% moisture. When the weather is dry, the sun naturally lowers the moisture content to ideal levels. When the weather is damp, we will use a drying fan to push a large volume of air through the harvested grain to get the moisture down below 14% which prevents spoilage and maintains quality. We take extra care to ensure each batch reaches the correct humidity before storage.

Samples from every harvest are collected for routine testing, including mycotoxin screening in our rye and other grains, to ensure they are safe for human consumption and healthy for our pigs and chickens.

After combining, the grain is cleaned to remove chaff and weed seeds. From there, it is either stone-ground into fresh flour or cornmeal, blended into organic feed for our pigs and chickens, or saved as clean seed for planting future cover crops.

These grains form a vital link in our farm’s ecosystem—feeding our animals, nourishing our soil, and providing wholesome food for our customers.

Why We Use Cover Crops

The use of cover crops protects the soil from erosion and improves soil structure. Bare soil is like a broken solar panel—it isn’t using sunlight to photosynthesize and grow plants to feed humans, animals, and soil microbes.

Healthy soil should be covered with vegetation as much as possible. Cover crops help retain water, increase organic matter, and feed microbial life and pollinators. Incorporating cover crops into the rotation improves fertility and increases yields of cash crops.

Why pay for bagged fertilizer when nature can provide her own fertility? Planting cover crops is the right thing to do—for your land and for future generations.

Cover Crop Seed for Sale

Misty Brook Farm offers a wide variety of cover crop seed. Planting a cover crop after harvest helps capture excess nutrients and add organic matter back to the soil.

We offer Winter Rye, Winter Wheat, Oats, Buckwheat, and Hairy Vetch.

Winter Rye and Winter Wheat planted with tillage radish, purple top turnip, and hairy vetch ensure your soil is not left to degrade over winter. When terminated in the spring, they break down naturally and enrich the soil for your next crop.
For a cover crop that winter-kills and can be easily incorporated into the soil in spring, Oats, Buckwheat, and Peas are excellent choices.
