Annual Sheep Shearing Day!
Come visit the farm! Our Annual Sheep Shearing Day offers a close look at an important part of farm life. Watch Jeff of Buckwheat Blossom Farm (learn more about Jeff here) shear the winter coats off our girls as we prepare for lambing season. This year, sheep from both Misty Brook Farm and Golden Fleece will be sheared. Golden Fleece is a small flock that lives alongside the Misty Brook sheep and is operated by Becca, a member of the Misty Brook Farm staff. Building a More Resilient Future – Our New Wood Boiler Project
A Big Step Forward for Farm Resilience This year, Misty Brook Farm received a 50% cost-share Implementation Grant through Maine Farmland Trust’s Farming for the Long Haul program. With that support, we were finally able to move ahead on a project we’ve talked about for years: installing a new wood boiler system that will make the farm more resilient for the long haul. The building isn’t finished yet and nothing is hooked up, but the concrete is poured, the boiler is set, and the structure is going up. It feels good to see this one starting to take shape. Open Farm Day is an annual event held across Maine, where farmers open their doors to their community and invite them to explore and learn about their farming practices. We always have an open door policy, and invite our customers to shop at our Farm Store and meet our family/animals year-round! This past Open Farm Day, we stocked up our shop with many seasonal treats including produce from Ironwood Farm, cheese from Swallowtail, Crooked Face and Copper Tail, yogurt from Fuzzy Udder and Milkhouse, and raspberries from Fruitful Meadows. Happy Birthday, Bumbles!
Last week we celebrated Bumble Bee’s 16th birthday! She is a truly loved part of our farm and family, and has been with Misty Brook since the very start. If 16 sounds like a lot of years for a dairy cow, you’re not wrong… It is definitely something worth celebrating! The average life span of a dairy cow in the United States is 4-6 years, though their natural life expectancy is drastically more: 15-20 years! We hope to have many more years with sweet Bumbles. RECIPE: Wonton Soup
Wonton soup can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. Chances are your local Chinese restaurant can get you a plastic quart sized container of the soup, or you can create your own delicious, home-made version with a few simple ingredients! What’s the deal with these tiny eggs?
You may have noticed that some of our standard-sized eggs have been replaced by smaller ones, not quite filing out the little nesting cups of the carton. What’s with these little eggs? Do they come from smaller chickens? A different variety? Young chickens, old chickens, nutrient-deprived ones? These are “pullet eggs” that come from our young, new-to-the-laying-game hens! A pullet is a female hen that is less than one year old. When a chick loses its downy feathers and develops adult feathers, it becomes known as a pullet (or a cockerel if it is male). RECIPE: Mongolian Beef
Mongolian Beef with Misty Brook Farm Shaved Steak Shaved steak is the highlighted Misty Brook product in this delicious meal. This thinly sliced cut of beef is most often seared hot and shoved between two hoagie rolls, dropped into a near-boiling bowl of Vietnamese pho, or served like we do here: in a savory, Asian-inspired sauce with veggies and rice. Misty Brook Bacon
Bacon is a kind of salt-cured pork made from various cuts of the pig, most commonly the belly. It’s a favorite component of a classic American breakfast, and is also used to add a rich, salty, fatty element to many dishes. Think BLTs and club sandwiches, or chopped up and rendered with onions before flavoring a chowder. Our bacon is all from our Tamworth hogs, a heritage breed that is historically known as “the bacon pig” because their thick bellies and golden fat.
